Come and discover Romans and your place in God’s story!
Mountain top moments can be profound, even healing. Noticing the vastness of God’s beautiful creation inspires us to see ourselves and our day-to-day problems from a different perspective. Our lives suddenly seem smaller, and God seems bigger and closer. The Bible is full of mountain top moments filled with spiritual significance from the testing of Abraham and Isaac on Mount Moriah, through the giving of the Law to Moses on Mount Sinai to Jesus’ glory being revealed on the Mount of Transfiguration and more.
Andrew Ollerton (author of the Bible Society’s popular Bible Course) has recently introduced a new series, The Romans Course, in which he compares the Romans letter to a metaphorical mountain climbing experience.
“PAUL’S LETTER TO ROME IS THE HIGH PEAK OF SCRIPTURE… ALL ROADS IN THE BIBLE LEAD TO ROMANS, AND ALL VIEWS AFFORDED BY THE BIBLE ARE SEEN MOST CLEARLY FROM ROMANS.” (J.I. Packer)
Just like journeying through physical high places, studying Romans can feel intimidating and sometimes challenging but highly rewarding. This letter has inspired many transformative moments throughout history and changed the lives of many, like St Augustine (fourth century), Martin Luther (sixteenth century), John Wesley (eighteenth century), and Karl Barth (twentieth century). Another more recent example is Sir David Suchet (otherwise known as Hercule Poirot), who became a Christian when he read Romans in his hotel room.
We will run The Romans Course in ten sessions at our Discipleship Groups and in a new sermon series from mid-September. We would love you to embark on this journey with us to discover Romans and our place in God’s story! And if you prefer the great indoors, please don’t worry, hiking boots are optional.
BONUS TIP: Why don’t you get a copy of Andrew Ollerton’s companion book to the course? It is entitled ‘Romans, A Letter That Makes Sense of Life’.
